I joined the Office for Gender Equality, University of Zurich, in 2007. Universities are fascinating to me because they are essentially all about innovation, yet at the same time they are extremely traditional organizations. The two forces of innovation and tradition shape the way UZH works to achieve gender equality at all levels.

In recent years, the conversation about unconscious bias has enabled a very valuable conversation about how all humans use culturally derived cognitive shortcuts to sort and interpret information about the world around us, for example, when we pass judgment on the quality of an idea or in recruitment. A large body of research shows that we associate competence, leadership, likeability, and even science itself, differently with women and men. We also associate care and nurturing differently with women and men. What does this mean for a business, a political party or a university that strives for excellence? Given unconscious bias, how can an organization be truly meritocratic? My contribution to the conference addresses these and other, related questions theoretically as well as on a practical level.
